Solar Farms: Low Impact, High Volume

Civil works for solar farms tend to be lighter-touch but cover vast areas. Site clearance, access tracks, drainage, pile foundations for panels, inverter pads, fencing, and cable trenching make up the bulk of the workload. While the tasks are relatively simple, the scale and speed required can be demanding—especially when projects stretch across hundreds of acres.

Wind Farms: Heavy Lifting Required

Wind is a different beast. Turbines are massive and require substantial groundworks: reinforced concrete foundations, crane pads, access roads capable of handling oversized loads, drainage systems, and often substation platforms. Offshore wind adds an extra layer of complexity, especially when working around cable landfalls and challenging terrain.

So… Who Wins?

In terms of civil engineering intensity? Wind takes the crown—especially offshore. But solar’s speed, repetition, and sheer footprint present their own logistical and planning challenges.
