Qualifications You’ll Need:
A Substation Site Manager role requires a mix of technical knowledge and leadership skills. Typical requirements include:
CSCS or ECS card (to prove health and safety competence).
Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) – a must-have for managers.
National Grid or SPEN authorisations (PCSM, TP137, SR163). These tickets allow you to take charge of specific types of high-voltage projects.
Electrical or civil background – either route can lead into substation management, but experience in both makes you highly valuable.
Experience Matters:
Before stepping into a Site Manager role, you’ll usually need experience as a:
Site Supervisor (Civils or M&E)
Site Engineer
Experienced Electrician or HV Jointer
This experience ensures you understand how the work gets done and can lead teams effectively.
